Free and funded CDL training

"Free" CDL training comes in four forms, and each has a catch worth knowing before you sign. This page explains them and points to the official doors in every state.

1. Workforce grants (WIOA)

The federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act pays for training in in-demand jobs through local workforce boards. You apply at an American Job Center, which checks eligibility (unemployed, low income, laid off, veteran and other groups) and pays an approved school directly. The school must be on the state's eligible training provider list, which is separate from FMCSA's registry. Find your American Job Center.

2. GI Bill and veterans' benefits

Veterans and some family members can use GI Bill benefits at schools the Department of Veterans Affairs has approved for the programme; not every registered school is VA-approved, so ask. Some states add their own veterans' tuition programmes. VA education benefits.

3. Company-paid training

A carrier trains you at its own academy or a partner school for little or nothing up front, and you agree to drive for them, commonly for about a year, often at a trainee rate. Leave early and you usually owe the tuition. It is not free; it is prepaid with your time. How it works and what to check.

4. State and local programmes

Some states fund CDL training through community colleges, apprenticeship programmes or transit agencies that need drivers. These change year to year, so the reliable route is the same American Job Center, which knows what is funded locally right now.

Before you accept "free"

  • Is the school on FMCSA's registry today? Every school on this site is; check its page for its status and what it teaches.
  • Who pays whom, and when? A grant pays the school directly; a carrier contract pays nothing until you leave early.
  • What happens if you fail the test, get injured, or the school closes? Get it in writing.
  • Does "free" include the permit, medical, test and truck-hire fees, or only tuition?
